TROPHYLAND CUP

The first of this season’s Trophyland Cup semi-final line-ups was confirmed on Sunday as Westferry Elite played host to Upshire in the second quarter final of the season so far at Wanstead Flats. Elite led early and battled hard to run out eventual 4-2 winners over the county cup quarter finalists to book a semi final against St Augustines.

PREMIER DIVISION CUP

There were two matches played in Sunday’s Premier Division Cup group stage competition with opening wins for Repton Park and Emerson Park in their respective clashes. Repton Park were at home to rivals Warren United in Hainault with both sides looking to kick-start their cup campaigns. And it was the hosts who will be pleased with their morning’s work confirming a 4-0 victory.

In the day’s other match, Emerson Park and Liberty Stars were both looking to bounce back from their opening match defeats with victory in their clash in Beckton. A closely fought match ensued between the sides with the visitors ultimately proving to have just a little too much as they won 2-1. Lewis Pether and Reece Sargent scored the all-important goals to win the match.

DIVISION FOUR CUP

In the Division Four Cup quarter-final there was a big win for Central Colts who travelled to Newham Athletic, returning home victorious with a place in the semi-final booked. Continuing their positive league form into the cups. Tunde Olagunju scored a hat-trick once again with a Ben Hodgson brace and single goals from Ricky Rix, Craig Le-Beau and Shannon Nyabunze completing the scoring to book a place in the semi-finals.

DIVISION ONE

In Division One, Leyton Celtic bounced back well from their county cup exit last time out to progress their title credentials in a scinterlating 8-1 win away at Barking & Dagenham Wanderers. Doubles from Simon Bush and Kieran Hawkes paved the way with Charlie Saywood, Zachary Leitch, James Topping and Ophel Idris accompanying them onto the scoresheet in the win. Florin Cirjan was on target with Wanderers’ consolation goal.

There was also a big win for Valentines United who took on Park Tavern in Dagenham with both sides eager to secure wins for different reasons. Chris Blohm and James Gibbings were on target once again with goals with Jimmy McCann, Sam Edwards and Sefu Campbell also scoring to render a David Hornsby goal as mere consolation for Park Tavern in a 5-1 scoreline.

FC Mexico have consolidated their second place in the table for another week but missed the chance to close the gap on the leading side, Ultimate Division, as they picked up a hard fought draw against East London Old Boys in a close game at Emerson Park Academy. The sides had to settle for a share of the spoils as they ended level at 2-2 which leaves both sides still in contention for promotion honours.

There was another huge game in this division as Korona Redbridge were visited by Waltham Athletic with both sides desperately in need of picking up some points to avoid the dreaded drop in Division Two for next season. Goals from Dawid Pietras and Dawid Smolarek were the main difference as a tight game was edged 2-1 by Korona who recorded a vital third league win of the season, moving off the bottom in the process.

DIVISION TWO

One of the matches of the day in Division Two saw two of the division’s promotion chasing sides face each other in Walthamstow with Wanstead United the visitors to face Chingford Athletic. Michael Mignot’s hat-trick will have left Chingford thinking that they had done enough, leading into the final moments of the game only for Wanstead to mount a comeback and win 4-3 in an incredible match which keeps United top of the pile.

Another team who needed to mount a comeback to earn themselves three points was St Augustines in their match against the improving Masterman. Daniel Cutts scored twice and Misha Djemaili once as Masterman raced out of the blocks early doors but the Saints slowly grappled their way back into the match and proved too much in the end as they won 7-3. Nathan Hitchman and the confusing duo of Thomas Neale and Thomas Neil both scored twice with Sean Hall netting the seventh goal to complete the win.

There was an important match at the bottom end of the table as Dagenham United travelled to Chadwell Heath to take on Lonsdale with both sides in danger of the drop this year. Kalium Fletcher got himself on the scoresheet for Lonsdale but Timmothy Clutterbuck, so often the hero for United, scored all four goals for his Dagenham side lead them to a 4-1 win that sees them up above their opponents into eighth place in the standings.

And in the day’s final Division Two match, the most local of local derbies saw London Fire Brigade hop over the hedge at Hainault to take on Flyhouse Athletic in their clash. Mid-table Flyhouse Athletic finally returned to winning ways as they cruised to a 5-1 win to keep them in touch with the sides above them in the table.

DIVISION THREE

In Division Three, it was a weekend to remember for Lings Elite who, at the eighth attempt of asking, secured themselves a league victory as they made the long journey to Dagenham to face Alliance United. Joshua Steele and Rory Bingham scored the all important goals that cancelled out a Leslie Sampson effort for the hosts in a 2-1 victory, moving Lings off of the foot of the table as a result.

At the other end of the table, there was a very important win for FC United of Hornchurch who responded in the best possible fashion to a defeat last time out as they played host to Roneo Colts in Rainham. In a well contested match, it was the title chasing Hornchurch side who managed to secure a 3-1 victory that closes the gap on the leaders once more to just two points with a huge battle of the top two sides scheduled for this weekend.

The side quietly going about their business just below the top two sides is Dagenham United Reserves who, after that scintillating win last weekend, took on Asianos Reserves on Sunday with both sides eager to record a win. And it was the title chasing side who will have been happiest with their morning’s work as Ricardo Teixeira, Sean Thomas and Gary Adams scored the goals to lift them to a 3-0, maintaining their own charge.

DIVISION FOUR

In Division Four, Thames Ironworks Community have closed the gap on the leaders at the top of the table to just three points following a 2-0 win at the weekend over Oak Royals in Newbury Park. Ben Glander and Reece Lewis were both on target to secure the win which maintains their promotion credentials with five league matches to go, with a game against Central Colts still to come.

The other side who will undoubtedly be in the mix for honours come the end of the season are Emerson Park Under 21s who, with games in hand, could still catch up with the Colts also. Their latest victory saw them beat Highams Park Royals 2-0 at the Academy with Jake Willis and Ronnie Hobbrough goals proving the difference.

The day’s final league action saw a local derby contest between East Ham Inter and Custom House Community Reserves take place at Wanstead Flats. The two sides, separated by four places but thirteen points in the standings, had to settle for a point apiece as they ended level at 1-1 to consolidate their positions.

COUNTY CUP

In the Essex Sunday Premier Cup, the last of the Corinthian League’s representatives, Romford Elite, had to forego their home advantage with a trip up the A12 to take on Witham United on Sunday. After a great run in the competition, this sadly proved a trip too far as they exited the competition, losing 5-2.
