DIVISION 1 CUP FINAL

The Division One Cup reached a dramatic climax on Sunday with a goal-filled encounter between the league champions, Chingford Celtic, and Aldborough Hatch down at Ship Lane.

An open start to the match saw Hatch out of the blocks fastest and putting a lot of pressure on the Celtic defence. They had the ball in the back of the net on 15 minutes but the assistant ruled out the goal for offside to keep the scores level. Two further great chances came via set pieces for Hatch with one particular instance drawing a save from Hasler in the Celtic goal. Then on the brink of half time, Rob Teppett broke the deadlock as he capitalised on a mistake to curl the ball around the Hatch keeper and give Celtic a 1-0 lead.

That goal really proved a turning point in the match as early in the second half, Chingford Celtic opened up a 2-0 lead with a second goal and another good finish to make it 2-0 as the flow of chances went the way of the men in green. A third goal arrived after an hour as the Celtic skipper got in behind and squared for a teammate to net for 12 yards out. Merely two minutes later, a fourth goal put paid to any comeback with a quite remarkable turnaround in the game from the opening twenty minutes. Hatch did get themselves on the scoresheet with a ten minutes to go, making the most of the ball across the face of goal to score from a yard out before netting a second on the final whistle to give the final scoreline a more accurate complexion.

Congratulations therefore to Chingford Celtic who become the fourth Corinthian club this season to record a league and cup double!

PREMIER DIVISION

In the Premier Division, the one game to take place saw a re-run of last weekend’s cup final as Ainslie Wood entertained Upshire with the latter knowing a point was needed to secure the league title. What ensued was a nine-goal thriller between the sides with Ben Pudler, Charles Vince, Eric Kelly and Marc Cologne scoring for Wood but crucially, for Upshire, the netted the odd goal that confirmed the title in their maiden season with the league.

Congratulations to everybody involved with Upshire on a great achievement for their club, one of four this season to record a league and cup double.

DIVISION TWO

The theme of late-season goal gluts continued into Division Two with four sides who clearly got the memo! The crucial match-up saw Lonsdale travelling to E4 Rangers in the knowledge that Ian Scott’s side would need at least a point to rescue their season and avoid the drop. Eleven goals in the game saw Lonsdale achieve their aim as they came through 6-5 winners to keep their place in Division Two.

In the division’s other game, a mere ten goals were served up in another cup final repeat as FC Mexico travelled to Park Tavern for both sides’ last games of the season. As Tavern games have tended to this season, this was filled with goal-drama with hot-shot David Hornsby moving top of the scorers chart with all five of his side’s goals. But two goals from Jack O’Neill and goals from Joe Ewenson, Danny Smith and Rhys Tyrrell gave FC Mexico a dramatic share of the points in a 5-5 draw!

DIVISION THREE

In the last game of Division Three this season, recently crowned champions Wanstead United were visited by Partizan CMC for the last game of a very creditable campaign for both sides. The United goal came from Jack Willis as the sides had to settle for a 1-1 draw and a share of the points on the day to round off their seasons.

WEST ESSEX SUNDAY CHARITY CUP FINAL

On Sunday afternoon, the West Essex Sunday Charity Cup reached it’s conclusion at Aveley FC where Corinthian side, Valentine United, took on Eva Hart from the Combination. A tightly contested match saw both sides battle hard on the day but it was a goal in each half from Eva Hart that eventually separated the sides, recording a 2-0 win to get their name on the trophy for the first time.
