Bank Holiday Monday saw the third of our cup final
weekends down at Thurrock FC with another well contested cup final played out
as the Corinthian Cup reached it’s climax for the season.
Corinthian Cup Final – EMWA 3-1 Lonsdale
Lonsdale came into this game as firm underdogs when
compared to their Premier Division opponents in the shape of EMWA. However,
results in the earlier rounds of the competition suggested that Lonsdale couldn’t
be taken lightly.
In fact, Lonsdale gave EMWA an almighty scare in
the opening half hour of the game as they took the game to their opponents and
looked the more likely to score. Their effort was rewarded early on as Geoffrey
Holmes finished expertly from a tight angle to give his side a 1-0 lead. This
seemed to be a trigger for the EMWA boys to raise their game and as the half
drew to a close, a penalty was awarded to EMWA for a trip in the box and Reece
Morgan converted to level the scores at the break.
In the second half, both sides had good spells of
possession and it was difficult to pick a winner until a second penalty award
in favour of EMWA saw them take a lead with George Ashwan netting from the spot
to make it 2-1. A third goal not long after put paid to any possible comeback
from Lonsdale as Shane Wallace drove in from the edge of the box to make it 3-1
which was how it ended up.
EMWA, who had represented the league up to the
quarter final stage of the county cup this season, received their awards and
the Corinthian Cup from Essex County FA Director, Mr Barry Fitzgerald, who was
the Guest of Honour for the day.
Credit to both sides for making this another good
game to watch.
