It might well be the 36th week of a long and arduous season for many but there were still matters to be decided on Sunday with titles, promotions and a cup final.

PREMIER DIVISION

In the Premier Division, double header action saw Romford Elite head to Warren United with the latter knowing a win would be enough to seal the league title. An opening burst saw Warren score three goals very early on which proved to be too much to come back from despite Chris Bird and Jordan Riches goals making it an interesting last few minutes. That 4-2 victory for Warren United was therefore enough to secure the league title for them. Many congratulations to Mark Dawkins and his side who have finally got their hands on the coveted silverware. A terrific achievement

Despite that win and the title having already been decided after the first game, there was still much to play for in the second of the day’s matches as Romford Elite knew they still needed a point to secure the runners-up spot. A hat-trick from Chris Bird and a Joshua Thompson strike were instrumental in Elite achieving just that as they won 4-0 to move second and take second place, crowing a solid season for the club.

DIVISION TWO

In Division Two, London Fire Brigade took on Wanstead United once again with last week’s encounter having seen United secure the league title. This time around, London Fire Brigade were the side who will have been the happier as they beat the champions 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller. Yomi Popoola scored twice with Enrique Jimenez, David Ellis and Gary O’Laughlin netting the crucial goals. That result sees them finish fifth in the table but remarkably just four points above the relegation zone in an incredibly tight division which saw a side with 21 points go down.

DIVISION THREE

Another of the day’s big games was scheduled for Division Three where Goresbrook went into their match at home to Ridgeway Rovers knowing that they needed a point at least to pip FC United of Hornchurch to take the runners-up spot in the table having seen their title dreams dashed on Wednesday night. They fell behind twice in the match to Ridgeway Rovers goals but strikes from Martin Tuohy and Liam Coney completed the comeback on each occasion to rescue the point that they needed to confirm promotion.

CHARITY CUP

The day’s remaining action centred on this season’s West Essex Sunday Charity Cup Final where Barking & Dagenham Wanderers were looking to end their season on a high, taking on the reigning champions in the form of Eva Hart. Wanderers were behind early on but levelled soon after on the rebound to make it 1-1. A couple of goals before the break for Eva Hart however appeared to have swung momentum back their way as Wanderers trailed 3-1. The second half saw a much improved performance, cutting the lead and then levelling the tie up with two composed finishes to make it 3-3 to send the game into extra time. But with legs beginning to tire, Eva Hart’s forward completed his hat-trick by scoring a crucial fourth goal for his side that proved just too much, bringing this thrilling contest to a conclusion in the May sunshine.

Congratulations to Eva Hart on retaining their crown and to Barking & Dagenham Wanderers on such a valiant fight back on the day.
