COUNTY CUP

On an extremely breezy Sunday morning this weekend, six Corinthian sides were able to make safe progress into the third round of the Essex county cup competitions with wins in their second round clashes.

The biggest win of the day saw two of the league’s Division One outfits, Korona Redbridge and Barking & Dagenham Wanderers, go head to head in the Essex Junior Cup in Barkingside. Having been semi-finalists in the Trophy competition last season, Wanderers continued their county cup prowess stepping up into the Cup competition, coming through their tie 4-0 to book a third round place at home to Mustard Worms.

Shock of the day came in Emerson Park where Division One’s FC Mexico played host to Division Two’s St Augustines. Despite the division difference, this wasn’t evident in the final scoreline as the Saints battled to a 3-1 victory over their opponents to secure the visit of Chelmsford-based Royal Regina in round three.

In a titanic tussle between two of the Division One’s top sides this season, East London Old Boys were visited by Ultimate Vision in their second round clash. A tightly contested match saw the sides end level at 2-2 after normal time and it took two extra time goals for the Old Boys to eventually pull them through. They’re on the road in round three where they travel east to face Woodham Athletic.

The final Junior Cup tie saw Dagenham United heading to Harold Hill to face Hendersons from the Brentwood Sunday League. A goal-filled clash saw eight goals with United unfortunately on the wrong end of a 5-3 scoreline as they exit the competition.

In the Essex Junior Trophy, the result of the day in this competition was executed by Goresbrook as the Division Three high-flyers played host to Division Two counterparts Barca in Chadwell Heath. A thoroughly absorbing encounter saw Barca level twice including a late goal to send the game into extra-time. But it was Goresbrook who stunned the visitors with two goals in the extra thirty minutes to win 4-2 and move on to a clash against West Essex Reserves in the next round.

There was also an important win for Masterman who have definitely saved their best performances for the cup competitions so far. They followed up their recent West Essex Cup win with a county cup victory at home to Recreativo Romford on Sunday, notching the only goal of the game to go through to round three. They now take on Royal Albert in the next round.

There was entertainment at Dagenham United Reserves in their county cup tie as they face Combination side Loxford Lions at Manor Road on Sunday. United went 2-0 down but clawed their way back into the game and completing a stunning 3-2 comeback to make the third round. Their reward is a trip up the A12 in November to take on Witham Phoenix.

And completing the day’s county cup action, Grey Area’s run in the county cup came to a halt for the season. Having reached this stage on the back of a fantastic cup giant-killing in the last round, they found the challenge posed by JK Silvertown to be a step too far, going down 3-1 in the end.

PREMIER DIVISION

The Premier Division leading pack has been increased this weekend after Warren United took on Romford Elite at home and came away victorious with maximum points. Joshua Thompson found the back of the net for Elite but two goals for James Peagram and a Harrison Slater strike were enough to secure the points for Warren and move to within a point of the leaders.

DIVISION ONE

The only game in Division One this week was a mouth-watering derby match as two sides with close ties, Leyton Celtic and Waltham Athletic, met for the first time at Douglas Eyre in Walthamstow. A game of seemingly few chances with defences working hard was settled by a single moment with Ophel Idris the man accredited with scoring the winning goal.

DIVISION TWO

The result of the day in Division Two came in Plaistow where Lonsdale turned the league table on it’s head by securing a first league win of the season over the previous league leaders, Wanstead United. The sides shared an astonishing eleven goals in the match as braces for Bradley Thomas and Jason Branche plus a Johnnie Offei goal gave United their five goals. However it proved not enough as Emanoyel Ntoi and Klodion Gjings also scored twice each adding to Gjergji goals from Arjan and Anton to hand Lonsdale a 6-5 victory.

Taking advantage of Wanstead United’s slip, Chingford Athletic moved back to the top of the table as they faced Westferry Elite in Walthamstow. Two goals from Michael Boahene and a strike apiece from both Michael Johnson and Alex Foss proved decisive to hand Chingford a fifth victory in six league matches so far this season in what is proving to be a highly competitive and unpredictable division.

DIVISION THREE

In Division Three, Alpha’s terrific recent form has seen them jump up to second place in the table as they cruised to a big 6-2 win on Sunday away at Asianos Reserves in Leyton. George Burton’s form in front of goal has been a large contributor to this with another hat-trick this week adding to goals from Roy Edmans, Ashley Godwin and Stephen Maitland. Ahmed Hussain and Mohammed Zurgani were the men on target with Asianos’ consolation goals.

The leaders, FC United of Hornchurch, remain top of charts for another week with their latest win seeing them defeat Roneo Colts at Robert Clack in a 3-1 scoreline. Campion Leroy was on target once again for Colts but his goal was cancelled out by strikes from Shane Cassidy, Billy Peartce and Steve Quant for the visitors who remain two points clear of the chasing sides.

It was a big day for Hornchurch Oakmont as the promoted outfit picked up a crucial first win of the season, seeing off the efforts of Morfdown Elect in a 3-1 scoreline at Westlands. Jack Edmonds found the back of the net for Elect but his efforts were in vain as Adam Cheeseman, Ellis Marsh and Charlie Woods completed the victory for the hosts to open their points tally.

DIVISION FOUR

The focus in Division Four on Sunday was undoubtedly on the mouth-watering clash of the top two sides this year in that division, namely Central Colts and Highams Park Royals. Colts came into the game top of the table and left in the same position as they enforced a second defeat on Royals, in a 3-1 final scoreline. Sean Gilbert found the target for Royals but Colts goals from Jimmy Turner, Paul Rosen and Tunde Olagunju secured a hugely important victory in the title race.

Fourth placed side, East Ham Inter, strengthened their promotion hopes with a victory of their own, beating Epping Forest Falcons in a 6-3 thriller in Woodford. Falcons goals from Ryan Lawless, Sam Avery and Adam Brewster were not quite enough as the visitors moved to a third league win of the season.

Biggest movers of the day in this division were Custom House Community Reserves who’s improved form of late has seen them shift up the division, completing a third league victory at the weekend over Newham Athletic in a 4-1 scoreline. Jiri Kucera was the hero for his side notching a hat-trick with Bernard Appiah scoring the fourth goal to cancel out a Newham goal from Jason Taylor.

Another side on the move were Oak Royals who made it two wins in two matches, turning around a difficult start to the campaign to climb up to seventh place in the table. Their latest victory saw them travel to Rainham to face Bata United, coming away winners in a 3-1 scoreline despite a Charlie Crispin goal for the hosts.

CHARITY CUP

Completing the day’s football action, Flyhouse Athletic were in West Essex Trophy action as they were visited by Hainault Athletic in a local derby match on Sunday. Looking to improve on last season’s runners-up performance in the competition, Flyhouse started their cup run this year with a 4-1 victory to book a quarter-final place at Sherforce or Alliance United.
